This baked cinnamon apple French toast is a cozy and flavorful breakfast option perfect for gatherings or weekend brunch!
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- Maple syrup for serving (optional)
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
- Layer half of the bread cubes in the baking dish. Spread the sliced apples evenly on top, then cover with the remaining bread cubes.
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread and apples, pressing down gently so the bread absorbs the liquid. Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for better absorption.
- When ready to bake, stir together the melted butter and brown sugar, then drizzle it evenly over the top.
- Bake for 30 minutes with the foil on. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until the casserole is golden and puffed up.
- Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup, if desired.
